As pointed out above, it's true that a delegation of repug congressmen called on Nixon to ask him to resign. Not to impugn their (possibly?) "statesman-like" motives, but I think they were just trying to escape the looming articles of impeachment certain to be brought by the Democratic majority in the house.

They were successful, and Nixon was allowed to resign and leave town just about one jump ahead of the impeachment posse. Better to have him resign, rather than suffer the ignomy of being witness to his impeachment.

Ford's unconditional pardon of Nixon for anything he HAD done, or MIGHT HAVE DONE, was the icing on the cake that helped put Jimmy Carter in office.

The repug house controlled impeachment of Clinton was totally payback "because we can" (according to Newt Gingrich).
