Democrat primaries swell voting lists

(Hartford-AP, Aug. 8, 2006 2:29 PM) _ Connecticut voters are turning out in bigger numbers than expected.

The Democratic primary today for the U.S. Senate and governor has drawn a lot of interest and state election officials say the turnout could end up being 50 percent.

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz is predicting a 45 to 50 percent turnout among voters today. that's up from her estimates earlier today of up to 40 percent.

She says many local election officials are reporting bigger than usual turnouts.

Figure show that 14,506 unaffiliated voters changed their affiliation to the Democratic party. In addition, 14,380 new voters registered as Democrats.

About 521 unaffiliated voters switched to vote as Republicans and more that 3,800 newly registered voters registered as Republicans.
