Hillary Clinton told a raucous and inspired Asheville crowd Thursday that as commander in chief she would end the war in Iraq while enacting universal health care and reviving a faltering economy.
Flanked by retired generals and with a backdrop reading “Solutions for a Strong Military,” the former first lady was repeatedly interrupted by standing ovations with thunderous applause inside the Asheville Civic Center’s Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.
One such outburst came with her pledge to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq within 60 days of becoming president.
“We must restore our moral authority around the world. That begins by ending the war in Iraq,” she said. “I will begin withdrawing our troops, and I will tell the Iraqis they must step up.”
Some 2,500 people packed the auditorium while hundreds more couldn’t get in. Attendees waived signs reading, “Welcome Madam Future President,” “Asheville Loves Hillary” and “Rural Country = Clinton Country.”

The Clinton family seems to have taken a liking to Asheville.
Three days after Sen. Hillary Clinton brought her presidential campaign to the Civic Center — and a month after former President Bill Clinton stumped for his wife at Asheville High — their daughter Chelsea Clinton came to town Sunday to attend church and meet with supporters.
After morning service at Central United Methodist Church downtown, she fielded questions about her mother’s positions at a movie theater.
“I’m so proud of both of my parents, but nothing would make me more proud than for my mom to be my president,” she said to supporters at Cinebarre theater at Biltmore Square Mall.
…………………
A Clinton supporter at the theater asked which would be more historic — electing the nation’s first woman president or the first African-American president.
“I think we’re making history by having this conversation,” Chelsea Clinton replied.
“We don’t want Obama. We want your mama,” another supporter yelled.

GRAHAM, N.C. - Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday criticized Barack Obama for opposing the concept of suspending the gas tax during the peak summer driving months, ……..
………….
Obama does not support the "gas tax holiday" and has said the average motorist would not benefit significantly from such a suspension; by some estimates, the federal government would lose about $10 billion in revenue.
"My opponent, Senator Obama, opposes giving consumers a break," Clinton said, campaigning in North Carolina. "I understand the American people need some relief."
Clinton said she would make up the difference in revenue by imposing a "windfall profits tax" on oil companies.
"If we suspended it and made up the lost revenues, that's the best of both worlds," she said.

RALEIGH, N.C. - Gov. Mike Easley will endorse Hillary Rodham Clinton for president, The Associated Press has learned.
Easley was expected to announce the endorsement Tuesday morning in Raleigh, the state capital, one week before North Carolina's primary on May 6, according to persons close to the governor and to Clinton. The individuals spoke on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement had not yet been made.
Easley is a Democratic superdelegate who has served two terms as governor. His decision comes despite several recent polls showing Clinton trailing rival Barack Obama ahead of the state's May 6 primary.
The endorsement is a major boost for the former first lady. Besides being a respected figure among Democrats in the state, Easley is one of the all-important superdelegates likely to choose the party's presidential nominee........
