WASHINGTON - Democratic Party insiders say Harold Ickes, a former Long Island lawyer with close ties to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, is being mentioned as a possible successor to the national party's outgoing chairman.

Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe is expected to step down when his term ends early next year, and jockeying for his position already is under way in the wake of Sen. John Kerry's presidential defeat. Ickes' name is one of several that has been making the rounds in party circles, say two senior Democratic sources.

Ickes, a longtime New York political operative, had a major but largely behind-the-scenes role in this year's election, heading up a multimillion-dollar pro-Kerry advertising effort. He is a former deputy chief of staff to President Bill Clinton and was the chief political strategist in Hillary Clinton's successful Senate bid in 2000. Ickes could not be reached Friday for comment.
