Israel Detains Nuclear Whistleblower Near Bethlehem
Advertisements [?]
Dec 24, 2004 — JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu was detained on Friday as he tried to enter the West Bank city of Bethlehem for Christmas in defiance of restrictions on his movement, Israeli police said.

Vanunu, a Christian convert from Judaism, was freed in April at the end of an 18-year prison term for treason. Vanunu's revelations to a British newspaper led experts to conclude that Israel had between 100 and 200 nuclear weapons.

"Vanunu said in preliminary investigations that even though he knew he was banned by the Israeli authorities from traveling to Bethlehem, he asked to pray at the Church of the Nativity. He is being transferred for further investigation," a statement said.
