GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - Israel shelled a Gaza Strip town where Palestinian militants fired rockets Monday, and hospital officials said six Palestinians were killed. The Palestinian prime minister called on the United States to pressure Israel to stop the offensive.

Palestinian militants had just fired seven rockets at southern Israel from the northern town of Beit Lahiya, causing no casualties but provoking an attack against the launch site, the Israeli army said.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said Washington should pressure Israel to stop its weekslong offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli shells exploded near an apartment building, creating a large crater and sending residents running through the area, some carrying their children.

One killed a girl and another exploded between two apartment buildings, hitting some residents standing outside, security officials said. Other shells shattered the windows and facade of another apartment building.

Also, artillery hit the front of a donkey cart carrying a 12-year-old boy and his 60-year-old aunt, killing both.
