how will you even prevent them from getting guns?

Guns are legal to manufacturer and sell. They always have been. So that means there are millions of guns legally owned by citizens.

Heroin (just to name one), is illegal to manufacturer, transport or possess. Yet anyone can buy it in any city in the USA any day of the week.

How in the world are you going to prevent criminals from obtaining handguns when the "war on drugs" has not stopped Heroin from being easily available?

I think the anti-gun crowd here does not realize it is impossible to prevent criminals from owning hand guns. I agree we should continue to try to prevent them from owning hand guns, because they are criminals. But preventing honest citizens from owning hand guns is not the solution to criminals having them.
