Some of these will probably be clarified by later news reports: for example, I might guess the guy who told police someone knocked on his door and shot him in the hand actually accidentally shot himself and was too embarrassed to admit that, since such false reports occur regularly

As expected, the big category in family violence, and (as another poster has remarked in the thread) one probably expects alcohol involvement in many of those cases
