1. It would be closer to Penn than Grand Central
According to Google: Its clean streets stretch from 20th Street until the start of Murray Hill at 34th Street, and are bordered by the East River and Park Avenue to the west.

Depending on where in Gramercy your job was located in, it could be as few as 6 or 7 blocks from Penn Station (34th between 7th and 8th Avenues). That's not too bad a walk. I used to walk from 57th and 6th to Grand Central (42nd and Park Avenue) when I worked in NYC. I'm afraid I don't know public transportation very well in NYC anymore. I've been away too long.
