For example, if you want to type "cat", you type "228" and it will give you the most frequent word, probably cat, first, followed by other words such as "bat". If that's not what you want, then there should be an option in the phone to select a different word. Normally, as you use the cell phone, it starts to anticipate the words you use most frequently and give you those first.

Personally, I find those to be a pain. I'm waiting for my contract to expire so I can get an Android phone - it has a touch-screen, and when you're texting or otherwise typing, it gives you an on-screen QWERTY keyboard.
