19. Oh, I was soooo devastated one Christmas ...
I had just fallen in love for the first time, and he was the first to tell me he loved me, it was this wonderful time. We'd been together since August of that year; we were in grad school together. He really, really wanted a nice amplifier for his guitar, so I spent money I didn't have, being a starving student, on a good one for his Christmas present. My best friend's husband was a professional guitarist in a successful band, and I asked him what to get. So I knew I was getting my boyfriend an excellent gift.

And he got me these really cheap, gold-wire earrings. That was it. Probably not even $10. I almost started to cry when I opened them, I was just so shocked and disappointed. He, by the way, was NOT a starving student; his parents were wealthy and putting him through school with plenty of extra $$ in his pocket.

And I don't really 'do' the gift thing, the forced gift-giving of the holiday season irritates me. But I guess I just thought he'd make more of an effort or gesture because it was a special, first-Christmas kind of thing.

Talk about feeling deflated.
