5. Oh honey..that is frightening.
I've been there so I understand both the fear and the anger. The suggestions I received at the time were to have good lighting, keep growth, plants, trees and bushes that may obstruct view away from the house/window areas.

There are window locks you can get to allow your window to open only so far..enough for air but not enough for an intruder. If you can't locate those, a nail will also work..driving it partially in just at the top of the raised window. I don't use box type fans..we only have one that can mount into the window and be affixed so that the window can not be slid up and the fan removed. It's the same with window air conditioners..they are all fully secured into the window frames so they can't be pushed in or pulled out.

I do keep a baseball bat in my bedroom..as well as a police sized flashlight.

You may want to discuss what happened with your neighbors. They may know things that haven't been reported to the police. When it happened to me, I mentioned it a few months later to a neighbor I'd just met. She'd had the same thing happen to her around the same time.
