Although I don't call them that. It's an engineer thing. We always have three pens in our pocket (You need three in case the first two don't work) A high lighter and a pencil are optional. Engineers need to have a pen handy for drawing pictures so other engineers can figure out what they're talking about. It used to be fun when my husband and I got home from work. We were both conscientious about leaving office supplies at work, so when we got home and tried to explain to each other what we'd worked on that day, we'd end up slapping an empty pocket looking for a pen.

Engineers don't need to carry paper. There is always something around (newspaper, bag, napkin, wall) that you can write on, but you gotta have a pen in your chest pocket.
