Why does high school suck so much?

A few decades ago, you used to hear this dumb platitude, "The high school years are the happiest years of your life." Haven't heard that in a while; maybe it's gone the way of the 8-track.

For a few, it might have been a good time of their life, but not for most people. For a great many people, myself included, high school sucked.
