There are plenty of times when it's quite unavoidable. I do try to make sure that if I'm walking to my car, that I've thought ahead and parked it somewhere that isn't too skanky an area after dark, and I'm really good at going invisible when I need to. I used to come home from college at 11 p.m. on the city bus and had to walk through the deserted streets of downtown about 9 blocks to my apartment, back when I was 18 years old. I got followed, harassed, and my roommate was attacked. It taught me how to walk at night without attracting attention, and how to not look like a target.

There's also the matter of CWPs, but we won't go there.
