many rainforest plant (including tree) species depend on their fruits and seeds being digested by certain bird and bat species; these nuts and seeds cannot germinate until they've passed through the digestive tracts of these animals. Without these specialized species, the world's rainforests-our planet's lungs-would begin disappearing without the aid of fire and chainsaws.

I often tell people that the planet functions like an automobile; you can take away the rear view mirror, the cigarette lighter-even the seats, and the vehicle will still run-but eventually you remove one screw or bolt that stops the machine cold. The planet teeters on the edge right now.
