The First Emancipator: The Forgotten Story of Robert Carter, the Founding Father Who Freed His Slaves
Andrew Levy

Andrew Levy tells the story of Robert Carter a "Deed of Gift" that freed over 450 slaves in his new book, "The First Emancipator." In 1791, Virginian Robert Carter III submitted a deed to the Northumberland District Courthouse that freed his slaves from his plantation. Mr. Levy explains the religious and politicals ideals that prompted the emancipation and explains why he feels Robert Carter has been forgotten by historians. This event was hosted by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia.

Andrew Levy is Cooper Chair at Butler University in Indiannapolis, Indiana. He has published essays in The American Soldier and Dissent. Mr. Levy is the author of "The Culture and Commerce of the American Short Story."
