I found this online petition and asked the umc.org about the validity of it. I was told that it was created by two people from Iowa, but was not directly from the umc.org organization. I made note to them at the time that the petition made reference to their umc.org URL.. Read petition text below: (interesting read)

I don't know the credibility of this petition source, but I did find it of interest and reportedly shows having over 800 signatures (private, not public, apparently in the petition) according to above URL...
