For 52 weeks, group firmly in corner of peace

BOCA RATON — There were metal heads, gray heads, bald heads and even furry heads among the 50 or so protesters Saturday afternoon on the corner of Glades Road and St. Andrews Boulevard in Boca Raton.

They have gathered each week protesting the war in Iraq to the supportive honks of passing cars and the occasional obscene gesture.

Saturday marked a milestone for the group, which calls itself Boca Peace Corner. Members have kept up the momentum for 52 weeks.

Much of the credit is being given to Jill Liberto, a Boca Raton housewife, a self-described former "pantyhose and pump, suit-wearing office person." The one-time paralegal says she simply got sick of yelling at the television every time she saw another story about the war.

It was around year ago, about the same time Liberto heard about a vigil to honor antiwar protester Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq. From there, she gathered e-mail addresses of about 100 people. She sent invitations to come to the corner on Saturday and, to her surprise, they started to show up.
