Seymour Hersh spelled this plan out a couple of months ago. We retreat, pulling our ground forces back to bases or out of Iraq completely and then try to retain control by bombing the crap out of the Iraqis on a daily basis. Of course the problem is that we have trained 10,000s of people in the region in the art of low tech insurgency against our forces. Everywhere we redeploy in the region will get destabilized. This is one of the reasons we had to get our crap out of saudi arabia to start with - Iraq was supposed to be the big new land base for control of the ME. We are so hosed at this point it would be amusing if only it didn't mean that thousands of our soldiers and tens of thousands of the people of the region are going to get killed until we finally get it and get out.
Anyhow at the moment I think the plan is still On To Iran! So I don't think we are going anywhere.
