Schwarzenegger: Special Election Crucial

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Defending his November special election before an audience of voters, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Monday the ballot initiatives are crucial to continue changes he launched two years ago.

He cast the Nov. 8 election as the next step of the 2003 recall election that propelled him to office. Voters, he said, sent him to Sacramento to rebuild the state's economy and fix a moribund political system.

"We need reform. We have a broken system. That's why you sent me to Sacramento _ to fix the broken system," he said. "Please give me the tools."

He contended his policies have created 400,000 new jobs and billions in new revenue.

Schwarzenegger insists he has momentum ahead of election

SACRAMENTO - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger accepted endorsements from the leaders of several statewide law enforcement organizations Monday, saying his campaign is gaining momentum just in time for the Nov. 8 special election.

"We have our ways of campaigning. We always come from behind," Schwarzenegger told reporters as he touted endorsements of propositions 76 and 77 from statewide lobbying groups that represent district attorneys, sheriffs and probation officers. "We always arc at the right time."

Schwarzenegger also was preparing for tonight's voter forum in the eastern San Francisco Bay area city of Walnut Creek, part of a last-minute push to persuade voters.

The 90-minute forum will be the first time he will sit for an extended period of time to field unscripted questions from an audience not chosen by his campaign staff.
