COURTHOUSE - Montgomery County Democrats are leading their Republican counterparts in the number of new voters registered since the April 27 primary elections.

Of the 32,447 new registrations processed by the county through Sept. 29, 14,656 were Democrats, 9,989 were Republicans and 6,877 registered as non-partisan. The remaining registrations were for minority parties, with the Independent Party and its 498 newly registered voters leading that pack.

The tallies do not surprise county Democratic Chairman Marcel L. Groen. "We are being exceptionally well-received," he said. "I have never seen such energy, such excitement, such intensity for the Democratic Party and its candidates." Groen said the Democrats are not doing anything out of the ordinary when it comes to registering new voters. "We are just working harder at it," he said.

"The numbers are what the numbers are although it is a trend that we don't like to see," new Montgomery County GOP Chairman Ken Davis said.
