Why should people be afraid of change?
Just rewatching Star Trek VI, and that's the theme of the piece. It oddly seems relevant today, but coincidentally so since this isn't about making friends with Russia after the Berlin Wall was torn down and sold as memorable collectible items somewhere...

4. No, but I'm a closet optimist...

And you're right. Without proof, people will have fear.

7. This, look at history
America has been blessed compared to other countries with a relatively peaceful history. Compare it to Europe, Russia in particular. Things were bad during the Tsarist regimes, and then people called for change for the better, but got Stalin instead.

6. They mistake being used to present conditions for being in control of the present
Many equate change with loss of control. What is familiar feels under control, even when it isn't. Not unlike abused people/animals often preferring to stay with abuser rather than face the unfamiliar.

10. Because much change is actively bad, as anyone who works for a
corporation knows. Change is always presented as a good, of course, but it is usually just a way of screwing the people who will be subjected to the change. So lots of us are skeptics when it comes to good old "change."
