Anyone see "Countdown with KO" tonight? Ronald Reagan would fail the
conservative purity test dedicated to him. Ronnie supported amnesty for illegal aliens, he supported gun control in CA, expanded govt. and ran up deficits. CLASSIC!!

4. Believe it or not, he was actually president of the Screen Actors Guild for a while.
That's right..... Ronald Reagan, Messiah of the right wing conservative movement, was the president of a UNION.

What the fuck happened to him?

7. His second wife
after he married her... his dad in law sat down and shall we say had a talk with son in law.

That was Nancy's dad.

Hartmann has covered this a few times in his program.

It was a birds and the bees talk of the political kind... and money was involved.

11. Ironic isn't it?
That his son from his first marriage (Michael) turns out to be an extreme right winger, and his son from his second marriage (Ron Jr.) is now on Air America radio.

13. Can't remember if he did or not
But I have heard that his shift to the right was to avoid being accused of being a "dirty filthy commie". Which is why he immediately went overboard in his right wing shilling, including this #1 hit record on the fascist top 40.....

16. That was during the Communist Witch Hunts.
Edited on Mon Nov-23-09 09:36 PM by kenny blankenship
One of the things he did as incoming Pres. of SAG was get the ball rolling on signing Loyalty Oaths (baby steps! Got to start somewhere!) - Everyone of any prominence in Hollywood had to sign new pledges that they weren't a Communist following the passage of the Taft Hartley Anti Labor Act in 1947. Communist witch hunting was just minor feature of Taft Hartley - which was in general concerned with destroying the power of labor unions. Insinuating that all labor organization was descended from the left testicle of Joe Stalin was the club used to reassert the dominance of the investor class after the war. The now familiar dodges used by "Right to work states" -the opting out from the 20th century by folks who just preferred the older way of doing things- takes their authorization from this act of Congress. Taft Hartley is why there are so-called right to work states. President Truman vetoed the bill, but the Democrats in Congress largely joined with the Republicans to attack labor rights. Friends of the working man, you know, then as now.

He switched sides later on down the road. I guess he found the money on the other side of the isle too hard to resist.

8. Reagan was the one that proved deficits don't matter, remember?
at least according to Cheney...

When Reagan took office, America was a net creditor nation - the world owed us more money than we owed the world. Heck, our country's financial strength and lack of debt really gave us a lot of foreign policy leverage in the post WW2 era, and also enabled us to "win" the Cold War.

However, Reagan turned America into the world's biggest debtor nation in 8 years, and now we're watching China rise to world prominence because of their financial strength & lack of debt gives them foreign policy leverage.

15. Point #9 in their purity test
(9) We support protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing and denial of health care and government funding of abortion; and

So they oppose the denial of healthcare? How does that jibe with continuing to support the market based private insurance system that has contracts under the terms of which they can deny healthcare? Is this just a vague and nebulous throw away statement to make it appear that they support healthcare for all Americans? Have the Republicans even come close to proposing a healthcare system that protects "the lives of vulnerable persons" and prohibits the "denial of health care" for those who can't afford an insurance policy?

He's got Reagan at only 4 out of 10 on the list. So I guess that means Ronald Reagan is no longer qualified to be the Republican Messiah?

20. St Ronnie also "Cut & Ran"....
...when the Marine Barracks was bombed in Beirut.

American peacekeeping forces in Beirut, a part of a multinational force during the Lebanese Civil War who had been earlier deployed by Reagan, were attacked on October 23, 1983. The Beirut barracks bombing resulted in the deaths of 241 American servicemen by suicide bombers. Reagan called the attack "despicable," pledged to keep a military force in Lebanon, and planned to target the Sheik Abdullah barracks in Baalbek, Lebanon, training ground for Hezbollah fighters,<127><128> but the mission was later aborted. On February 7, 1984, President Reagan ordered the Marines to begin withdrawal from Lebanon.
