Carnales!
Finally glad to see this group up and I hope it succeeds. I'm Ecuadorean-American (born in Chicago, both my parents born in Ecuador). What about you?

2. Colombian-American
But my grandfather was from Guayaquil, Ecuador. He ended up moving to Colombia and marrying a Colombian woman and raising a huge family in Bogota.

But as you probably know, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuala and Panama were at one point in history, one country called La Gran Colombia.

however, my Irish side of the family has strong roots in northern Mexico. Here is a pic of my great great Uncle in Mexico outside of his saloon in Torreón. He is the taller gentleman.

places. Ironically he died about 5 years after the pic was taken from cirrhosis of the liver. I guess he was in the wrong profession. Here is the inside by the way: My great, great uncle is the one standing.

8. It's remarkable that these images are so well preserved! All
of the ones I know of in our family are degrading.

How in the world did they supply themselves? It's hard to imagine when you belong to the 7-11 culture that a lot of the things in that room were shipped in. There must have been a good barber in town, though.

9. I couldn't tell you, but they did well for themselves
until the Revolution of 1910. They were then kicked out by the Villistas. One part of the family moved to the western part of the US and my family moved first to Piedras Negras, Mexico but was later found by more Villistas and kicked out for good. They then moved across the border to Eagle Pass, TX. My great great grandfather died of appendicitis there. My great, great grandmother started a boarding house. Here is a recent picture of it right on the border. You can throw a rock from there and hit the Rio Grande.

And one last pic of my family in front of their house in Piedras Negras, Mexico.

10. Being Mexican can be more than Spanish-Native American
I adore your photo. As for Irish being Mexican, Mexican can be a mixture of a lot of ethnic groups. There was a huge group of Germans that ended up settling in Mexico. Anyone who has listened to Mexican Music or Tex-Mex can testify to this fact. It isn't unusual to find accordions used in Mexican music, and Mexican polkas are a favorite to dance to.

14. I'm very interested in the history of the Irish in Latin America
for lots of reasons.

Doug's mum is a Kelly/Bresnahan married to a Brazilian via Vancouver but there was never any Canadian intermarriage.

Also, when the "new" world was "new", Irish people showed up in British cartoons as black and also as "native".

So, to my mind, there are ways in which Irish culture is more akin to our indigenous cultures than to British culture. I hope that makes any kind of sense, even in any way. :silly:

17. I understand very well what you are saying.
A lot of people do not know that when the British started plantations in the Caribbean area, they brought Irish slaves to work on them. I always wondered if the wonderful accent of folks from Jamaica had something to do with Africans and Irish working together as British slaves. Anyway, the British have controlled Ireland and pushed the Irish around in a very similar way other conquering people treated natives of the area they conquered.
