Storm - Power
Hi. I am just wondering if anyone else here was affected by the storm - My power was out from Thurs. at 5 am until yesterday afternoon. Friday night was pretty chilly - it got down to 47 in my house, but luckily it was off only Fri. night. Anyway just wanted to mention if you were one who did or did not lose power, we've decided not to turn our heat down at night until all this is over in case the power goes out again - because when it went off at 5 am (3 in my brother's case) it was already down 10 degrees from what I normally keep it so it got colder alot faster.

Also I've got water freezing outside in milk jugs in case I need to keep any of my food in a cooler.

The problem is when the ice melts there is also a danger of trees breaking, so I'm crossing my fingers that I keep my heat. I know there are still hundreds of thousands without power and it's 19 degrees right now here in St. Louis. I am very grateful though for all the utility workers having to work in this cold weather to get power back to people.

Meg

1. Nope...
I'm in SW Missouri, and I thought for sure we were going to lose power...my wife and I live out in the country, and have our power knocked out due to rain/wind, and I thought for sure the ice/sleet storm thursday would've knocked us offline...but we had power throughout the whole storm.

2. We had no power from Thursday until Saturday night
and some homes near ours are still without power. We ended up sleeping in the basement, where its a surprizing 55 degrees. Moved all the food from the refrigerator to a cooler on the back porch. At least the hot water is on gas heat, so we had hot tea and cocoa.

3. Power stayed on here.
I live in Columbia and our power stayed on much to my surprise. We're all electric and have no basement, but the basement staying 55 doesn't surprise me much. Anything below the frost line maintains a pretty even temperature.

My grandfather who would now be well over a hundred years old told me that when he was a child growing up that they had no way of keeping things cold but that the way that most people kept food such as onions, apples and other vegetables and fruits was to dig a hole in the ground below the frost line, line it with straw and that kept their food from spoiling.

4. Just caught htis post.
I'm in Warrensburg. We had power but schools were closed for a couple of days. We had about 1/2 inch of ice the night before, then two inches of snow followed by sleet which instantly froze (and left 1/4 inch of ice on the streets), then about 14 more inches of snow.

Lots of stranded motorists due to the roads not plowed properly.

6. we lost power for just over 7 days total
we lost it friday the 12th at 10pm....the power came back on monday night, for 26hrs or so...the power went off again wednesday morning at 11am...then it came back on thursday night around 10pm...then went off again around 9am friday morning. The power came back on again, monday the 22nd around 3:30pm, and has been on ever since...I hope/pray the power stays on! I took the damn hottest shower ever today...I finally feel clean...

We had a wood stove, and we had that for heat, and we also cooked on it...we had my mother/father in law over the whole time...and about the only thing that etched on me, was the stir crazy/cabin fever aspect of the situation.

We had a ton of fallen tree's around us, we live out in the country in SW Missouri, and tree's were falling like W's approval rating...I'm glad that you are safe though! On a side note, we had the national guard out in our area, and they even stopped by to check on us...I believe they did a house to house check on everyone....
