Progressive Pages- Need your feedback!
I just visited DancingBear's thread about wanting to come up with a directory of Repuke businesses to boycott and provide decent progressive alternatives for folks.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=2587076&mesg_id=2587076&page=

I'd like to help any way I can to compile this book.

Here's what I need from ya'll:

Give me the names and approximate locations of any local LA businesses you saw the last year or so with Bush/Cheney signs outside, behind the counters or in windows. Any "I support President Bush and our troops?" or anything equivalent?

Alternately, provide the names and approximate addresses of progressive or Democratic owned or Democratic-supporting businesses you can recommend instead.

Let us know about good AND bad experiences you've had patronizing good or bad businesses all over the state!

Thanks everybody!
Let's hear em!

1. There is another idea that I have
and I have already registered the site name and I have a couple people who are interested in helping out with it.

What about all the elected officials who claim to be democrats but support extremist republicans? Should we try and get them out of office as well?

4. We should definitely do that dan,
but I'm afraid that topic doesn't quite fall within our scope of a business directory.

We're going to have our hands full finding businesses to include.

But I wish you luck in trying to publicize your candidates list!

14. Thanks!
I dont know if I will actually be doing it or not. I need to consider the ramifications if I would run again. Though I do know somebody that would pick up the slack with it.

2. I think this is a great idea, but
here in Abbeville, as in other smallish towns, we don't have much of a choice in where we shop. Most businesses are pro-bush, whether they be family-owned or corporate-owned. I can't grow my own food, cook-up my own meds or make my own clothes. I can boycott Walmart, and end up spending more money by shopping at local, family owned businesses instead, but they are repukes too. I will keep my eyes open tho, and report what I see. Unfortunately, here, if the business is owned by Dems, they keep it very quiet, out of necessity.

3. I understand, Ann.
And it will be that way in many places. But we're doing what we can to help those who really deserve our business.

Keep your chin up down there. And keep quiet if you have to.

18. Look at it this way...
In a small town, when you CAN make a choice, your choice will be heard much louder than in big cities.

5. Count me in!
I just started a thread about this same thing. Here's what it said

"I don't know about y'all but I REFUSE to give my hard earned money to any BUSH supporting business. I would like to begin compiling a list that will be suplimental to the national list that is being compiled in the GD DU board.

Please list businesses, business locations their political affiliations, and how you came across this knowledge. I think that looking into political contributions may be a good start.

I'm not just starting a "boycott" list. This should also be a list of Democratic leaning businesses as well. Lets be sure to point out the businesses who deserve our money."

6. Opensecrets
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 10:39 AM by funkybutt
This is a great way to start. You can just put in the Zip Code and find every political contribution in that area. I found too many things to post just when I entered in the 70125. If you need some help compiling this info let me know. Maybe we could delegate certain Zip Codes to different volunteers.

On edit: forgot to include the url

7. Listen to AM talk radio
Here in Baton Rouge, there are some who put a LOT of money into advertising on Right-wing hate radio. Here are some:

Charlie's Coffee
The Melting Pot restaurants
Ruth's Chris steakhouse
Direct TV (perhaps the most irritating ads you'll hear)
Peretti Jaguar
Churchill's bar

10. Great idea!
Maybe the Dem.Party has a local donor list.
I have a question. Can we have a 'buddylist'?I don't know DU people here in Baton Rouge and, right now, feel very isolated.I just don't know who to trust and most people I work with are republicans/fundies.
I almost panicked this am,because I couldn't get DU to come up(page cannot be displayed).
I'm really shaken by this election and my dog died 11/03.
Sorry,I'm being a wuzz.

11. Sorry to hear that mint_julep
I have been so upset since the results that I just really don't think I could handle the loss of a pet. You should get another puppy as soon as possible (unless you're considering leaving the country)

You're not alone over there. You should start attending regular democratic meetings and possibly some local message boards as well. These are tough times but we'll get through this. We're on the right side. Micheal Moores post from yesterday made me feel a little bit better.

12. Hi mint!
Looks like Chomskyite above is in Baton Rouge...why don't ya try to grab a coffee or a beer or something?

And do you know anyone in your local Democratic party? I'm in Repub central here in Texas, and I've felt so much better since I met my Rockwall County Democratic friends. I'm not as isolated.

Good luck!

15. Could this backfire though?
I mean, what if a business owner supports a republican but has a majority of voting Democrats. If we publically let it be known that this is why the store is being boycotted then wouldnt it hurt those employees as well?

But those in charge must know we're voting with our dollars.

Money seems to be the only thing they understand. Our economy is going down the tubes no matter what we do. We're going to help the ones in power understand why that is.

There are Gay Pages and Christian pages; we're just doing Progressives one better in deciding where to shop. If the assholes are that disgusted by Democrats, then they shouldn't have a problem with losing our business, right?

We matter, and we're going to show them why.

Not surprised about Benson at all.

My uncle worked for one of his dealerships in San Antonio in the 80s, and he was an asshole then.
