(95,243 posts)It is hard not to draw conclusions. It is extremely difficult for even the best of writers to describe someone else without engaging in a torrent of self-revelation.
I have an abiding interest in old popular culture, the old pulp magazines and the cheap paperbacks and early television shows. I think they play a great role in shaping the thoughts and views of persons who imbibed them deeply in their youth, though that role is generally unnoticed even by the persons so affected, and is generally considered beneath notice by serious commentators and students of public attitudes. It is astonishing how much of the present political and social attitudes of older men in particular can be found rooted in these 'lowbrow' culture products which were staples of their childhood and youth.
