(43,049 posts)The Civil Rights Act of 1964 exists thanks largely to the efforts of Everett Dirkson, the Republican who shepherded it through the Senate which was controlled by segregationist Southern Democrats at the time.
Which brings me to the minor point that the Democrats have been much in the business of progressive leadership. Most of the the good things that happened in the 30s or 40s were from the necessities of the Depression and WWII, neither of which are happening now.
There was a Progressive Party ror a while, but it didn't do very well. Not even with a great progressive Republican leading it. (Betcha hardly anyone remembers La Follette or Henry Wallace, though...)
The one grand progressive stand the Democratic Party made was giving the nod to the guy who gave the Cross of Gold speech. A pacifist and spokesman for the Midwestern farmer. You may remember him more for the Scopes trial.
Democrats have been responsible for much progressive thought and legislation, but have never been more than leaning left.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
