(28,940 posts)Here is what happened to the Democratic Party.
1. Dems in the 70's primary source of money was labor unions but Reagan began to break them up to where they the Democratic Party was no longer able to fundraise effectively and Republicans were getting tons of money from big business and Wall Street.
2. Bill Clinton recognized this problem and began courting Wall Street for cash and so the Democratic Party really moved more into the position moderate Republicans were in during the 60's and 70's.
3. This issue only got worse and the DNC knew Wall Street called the shots. Dems were allowed to have their social issues but when it came to fiscal policy Wall Street didn't allow Dems much freedom. Meanwhile they were not standing up to the GOP on things like taxes, wages, regulating banks etc.
4. The progressive FDR wing of the Democratic Party started to feel disenfranchised and began to flex their muscle again and have so far not been very effective but the movement is growing.
