The DOE and private corporations started the Clean Coal Technology Program in 1985. Since the program started nearly 30 years ago sulfur has been all but eliminated from escaping into the atmosphere. We're left with a clean smoke mostly made up of CO2 that is released from stacks upwards of 1,000ft tall. So not only has the Clean Coal Technology Program removed the threat of acid rain, it also provides plants and trees with nourishment.
