3. I believe his "unorthodox" campaign tricked a lot of people early on

And by "people" I mean those in the media and at the RNC. I think they saw him skirting conventional wisdom and doing the opposite of successful campaigns in the past and thought "who, if he is doing this, he must have some brilliant master strategy at work. No presidential candidate would act like this if it wasn't some 12 dimensional chess shit or something."

Back in June with the attacking of the judge, some people starting to figure out that "ok, maybe this guy doesn't quite understand what he's doing but maybe he can recover". But by the end of the republican convention and the attacks on the Khan family, most now realize "ok, trump is clearly an erratic, racist, moron that stumbled into the nomination like a blind man that happened to find a nickel on the street."

So you're right, Trump has revealed his true self and the republicans are realizing that the odd but somehow captivating doctor is actually just a mental patient that stole a lab coat and is speaking gibberish.
