always a paycheck or two away from disaster. A foreclosure. A reposession. Bill collectors calling at all hours. Bankruptcy. Stay healthy because an illness can financially destroy you even if you were a good corporate citizen and signed up for shitty high deductible, high copay, high premium for-profit worthless insurance. If you have a toothache, you'll soon discover that the dental plan you are lucky to have at all sucks too. Want your kid to go to college? Be prepared for serious sticker shock and prepare to take out loans -- lots of loans, so that your child can amass a serious amount of debt before he or she turns 21. It's the American way. Oh, and don't expect that son or daughter of yours to land a good job with benefits after graduation, because those are scarce and reserved for the well-connected. My new college graduate last year landed a low paying job at a tech outfit where employees were expected to provide their own computer and sit all day at picnic tables -- I shit you not. That's what it's come to.
The only winners are the corporations and those at the top who've arrived there by scheming, cheating, backstabbing, and whatever else would get them ahead. As the brilliant George Carlin famously opined, "It's a big club and you ain't in it."
This election does not bode well for our future.
