The truth is, in the post-1981 economy, "success" has had almost nothing to do with "merit". Mostly, what has been called "success" has been people getting richer by inflicting suffering on other people(through outsourcing, benefit cuts, wage cuts, and mass layoffs. Almost no one has become ultrarich since 1981 as a result of actually working any harder than anybody else or as a result of bringing anything positive to the world.

And y'know "equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome" is a Republican line. There's no excuse for a Democrat ever using right-wing rhetoric like that.
