But I kinda-sorta knew Novak in the 1960s. He started off a pretty standard Democrat and was very helpful with the election of JFK. Then he started to get weird, starting first with LBJ.

He was theoretically Jewish but openly mocked observant Jewish people and despised Israel.

I believe he eventually was baptized and become a hard-line Roman Catholic, but that was long after I ceased to have any interaction with him.

I will say he knew more about sports than any person I ever met.

So, anyway, I'm as reluctant to call someone a "self-loathing Jew" as I am to call anyone a Nazi, but Novak really was a self-loathing Jew.
