They played by "societal rules" and still considered no different based on shared skin color. After decades of this, it could wear you down. How does that effect how they raise their kids? I am not thinking it is just the negative effect of stop trying, but sometimes the positive of trying harder feeds back into the cycle.

Regardless of how much education, success (success doesn't always lead to wealth) - or wealth you obtain - they are not safeguards against every day prejudice and bigotry.
