Clinton: Clock 'turning back' for women
[Fighting] to give women and girls a fighting chance isnt just a nice thing to do, Clinton writes in The Shriver Report: A womans nation pushes back from the brink. It isnt some luxury that we only get to when we have time on our hands. This is a core imperative for every human being in every society. If we do not continue the campaign for womens rights and opportunities, the world we want to live in and the country we all love and cherish will not be what it should be.
Clintons essay is part of the books broader examination of working women and the economic challenges many confront, a cause she champions in many of her public appearances.
( Also on POLITICO: Will Obama drag down Hillary?)
I think of the extraordinary sacrifices my mother made to survive her own difficult childhood, to give me not only life but also opportunity, along with love and inspiration, Clinton writes. Im very proud of my own daughter, and I look at all these young women Ive been privileged to work with or know through [daughter] Chelsea, and its hard to imagine turning the clock back on them. But in places throughout America large and small, the clock is turning back.
Clinton points to a wide range of issues, from pay equity to work-family balance to life expectancy, as areas where women in the United States still face problems, though she also nods to gains in business, academia, governmentyou name it.
Contributors include pop star Beyonce Knowles-Carter, Facebooks Sheryl Sandberg, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and basketball star LeBron James.
The report comes as Democrats have intensified their focus on addressing income inequality issues, starting with the unemployment benefits extension currently under consideration in Congress.

What Hillary Clinton Did for Women (and Men) Everywhere
Clinton fought for womens rights, encouraged entrepreneurship and made it okay to look your age
As Hillary Clinton contemplates her next move, one thing is clear: as secretary of state she changed the narrative on women by championing their social, political and economic rights around the world.
Clintons long-term commitment to the cause of women led her to create the position of United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Womens Issues in the beginning of her term in 2009. The aim of the office is to ensure that womens issues are fully integrated in the formulation and conduct of U.S. foreign policy.
Hillary Clinton has been superb in shining a global spotlight on womens rights and empowerment, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof told The Story Exchange.
Clinton visited more countries than any other secretary of state clocking in close to a million miles of travel to 112 countries and on most trips, visiting womens projects, businesses and activists was a priority for her.
