(2,863 posts)40. You can hardly blame British voters for not turning up at the polls
when the first past the post system effectively disenfranchises most of the electorate. It is basically designed to support the two party system and maintain the political establishment. The whole edifice started to creak at the last election when no party could get a majority. It is likely to rendered a complete farce if we get a substantial fourth party in the mix. Again ironically the rise of UKIP is taking British politics closer to the European model where coalition government tends to be the norm. PR would give us a more representative democracy but given the dogs breakfast made of selling it last time I do not expect to see it anytime soon unless one of the established parties looks to be heading for complete annihilation
