Smithfield meat worker allegedly peed on the production line [View all]

A Smithfield Foods, Inc. spokeswoman said the company discarded more than 50,000 pounds of product after an employee was filmed allegedly urinating while working on a production line.

Spokeswoman Lisa Martin also said while the company investigates the allegation, the employee has been suspended.

Martin said the incident was isolated and the company has taken the appropriate steps to ensure product quality.

"In accordance with Smithfield’s food safety and quality standards, more than 50,000 pounds of product were disposed of following an initial internal investigation that revealed an employee allegedly urinated at his station during the production process," Martin said in a statement. "The facility immediately halted production, fully cleaned the processing line, and sanitized all equipment multiple times before resuming operations."
