'Awful' I believe it objectively is not. At least insofar as music can be objectively rated ..
You may not care for it ... no music is going to be to everyone's taste. One does need to have to have a taste for 'guitar squall' to enjoy it, no doubt. Believe it or not though, if you just listen a few times you'll find it's as hook-filled as just about any record ever made.
On Edit: Basically if you can dig the below song & video, then you can dig Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend album (which was 2 albums before 100% Fun, the one that contains Sick of Myself).
The Girlfriend record though doesn't actually have a song that rocks AS hard as Sick of Myself ... but most people have heard this song from 100% Fun, which is ALSO a freaking brilliant album ... and it IS his absolutely MOST hard-rocking tune so if you can handle this level of rockitude ... you can hang with any of his stuff.
If you don't like the opener Divine Intervention on Girlfriend (which, I personally love but I could see in that one case, not digging it that much and it's unfortunately perhaps ... the opener ... even though it is perhaps the least great song on it) ... I urge you to at LEAST listen to the section of 'Looking at the Sun' through 'Thought I Knew You' ... And then check out, I Wanted To Tell You, Don't Go and Your Sweet Voice (which closed out the vinyl copy, hence the click track at the end ... songs 13-15 were cd bonus tracks).
I love that there's literally NOTHING but Bass, Drums, Guitar (including Steel), Vocals (all by Matthew) on this entire album. No Horns, No Keys, No Strings (that aren't on a guitar) ... I really think John would've loved it as well.
Lastly ... I proffer you this ...
