How can you reconcile being a Slytherin in Harry Potter and being politically liberal/progressive? [View all]

I'm as proud as you can be when it comes to being politically progressive, and supported both Bernie and Hillary strongly. However, I've always been sorted into Slytherin House on Harry Potter. My friends are confused, because they view Gryffindor and Hufflepuff as the progressive ones, with Slytherin being the more traditional, aristocratic conservative one (even potentially reactionary with people like Voldemort and pureblood supremacist fascists like the Death Eaters). They think Slytherins are all Republicans.

Slytherin traits include ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, self-preservation, fraternity, cleverness, etc. How can I balance that with being a liberal?
