(5,167 posts)28. A friend from Erie PA used the term "mistake by the Lake" in the mid-50's,
so the term has been around a lot longer than the late 1960s.
She said it referred to Erie, but perhaps the term was used derogatorily about any city on the Great Lakes.

Grew up in suburb of Cleve - it's a very under-rated city. Culturally significant and way more fun
