In reply to the discussion: menatime in Norway - police do this with a drunk man on the street. [View all]tblue37
(65,227 posts)they speak to him, how calmly. No shouting, no cursing at him, no deliberate escalation of the situation. When he tries to hit or kick, they control him with as little force as possible, and even though he is kicking them, they never get angry, violent--*or even impolite* in the way they address him.
In the US, the cops would repeatedly chant, "Stop resisting arrest," in a monotone, while piling on in large numbers and beating him bloody"--or even to brain damage or death.
Notice, too, that even while dealng with an obnoxious, belligerent drunk, the cops are actually more concerned with *his* safety and well-being, assessing the situation carefully to determine whether he just needs to sleep it off, or whether he might need hospital care.
They are trying to "protect and serve" the citizens, even the one giving them so much crap, not trying to dominate and to exercise their power.
That is exactly the opposite of how our cops act, especially when dealing with anyone from a powerless or marginalized group--and, of course, double especially with PoC.
