(30,657 posts)17. I live in a rural community that is white.
However, I am active in the Democratic party, so I get out and work in more diverse, larger communities nearby. Because of that, I have some black friends. We have worked together to elect Democrats, so we socialize. Having something in common makes skin color and cultural differences mean less.

It's hard for people to make friends if there is racial tension in the larger society.
