In reply to the discussion: NBC News: Boy Scouts Close to Ending Ban on Gay Members, Leaders [View all]Xithras
(16,191 posts)84. To paraphraise Voltaire, "Perfection is the enemy of progress".
Maybe you haven't read enough of my posts over the years to know this, but I help put the B in LGBT, so I'm not trying to exuse anything of the sort (a fact that pretty much every parent affiliated with my sons units was aware of, and that none of them had a problem with, FWIW). The goal is ABSOLUTELY to get to the point where bigots are rejected from scouting, but that's not going to happen over night. You don't win a war with a single battle, and you don't change an organization the size of the BSA with one rule modification. There's no way to do that, right now, without completely restructuring the way scouting operates. That may happen eventually, but it will take many years.
Your suggestion would simply end the existence of the BSA.

I don't have children but I have insisted that family members with sons do just as you have done

The proposal would not leave the decision to the units, but to the chartering organization.

Here you go - Catholic and Mormon bigots won't change. No hope for Arizona Scouting.

They would just be following President Obama's lead on Gay Rights being a local issue

Many of us involved in scouting have LONG said that this was a simple compromise.

I'd never participate in an organization that had an official no gays/no atheists policy, though.
