3. Anyone else remember the arguments as to why the Alaska Pipeline was an absolute necessity?

It was going to "alleviate" the problems the people living in California, Oregon and Washington were having with getting reasonably priced gasoline. Turned out, there wasn't sufficient refining capacity in those states to process the crude so it ended up being shipped to Japan and other Western Pacific countries.
Proponents of the pipeline - "Oh, gee. How could we have not seen that coming?" Of course, the necessary capacity never was built.
