In reply to the discussion: Meat plant workers to Trump: Employees aren't going to show up [View all]bubbazero
(296 posts)Most of the workers at TYSON'S (formerly IBP) are immigrants--as is true all over the meat packing industry. Black Hawk county is usually reliably DEMOCRAT leaning in it's politics. Significant minority communities, (African American, Bosnian, Latino, etc.) Most have come here over the decades for work in either meat packing or farm equipment or other manufacturing--John Deere, Chamberlain, CASE, etc. Neighbor who works at TYSON waterloo plant informed me, that plant workers were tested this past weekend--with approx. 44% testing positive. Deaths have already occurred, more to follow sadly. Yea, to some, we are referred to with the same contemptuous tone which some used when describing the Vietnam War soldiers--(during the war) I'm of that age--it ended shortly b4 I was eligible for the draft--Big sigh of relief as you can imagine--no possible college deferment in the future so very glad it ended. But I don't agree with ANYONE being treated as expendable even if we are just; The Niggers, The Spics, and The Hics. (that's what we were called then. and I swear sometimes that's how we're viewed now!) We are all created EQUAL and should be treated as such. Those workers in those plants--some of whom I know--are the same as the workers in those plants when I worked those kinds of jobs. They have Lives, they Love their Families, They Love Their Kids, and Their Kids Love Them. I Hope they are given the chance to stay safe, and given the same opportunities I had. Period.
