Since she had originally been a civil service State Department employee before being nominated and confirmed to the Ambassador position BEFORE the 2016 election, and since nothing has come out about her being "fired" per se, I think what they did was a paperwork move - from a Schedule C appointment to some (possible) SES-type position, for example going the SES "Reassignment" route (since she had been a higher level type and they may not have gone through the paperwork to convert back to regular civil service) - https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/5/317.604
