A shooting near a shopping mall in El Paso has resulted in multiple fatalities and other people being taken to local hospitals, law enforcement officials said.
El Paso police said at about 1 p.m. local time that there were multiple fatalities and several people taken to hospitals. Police also said one person is in custody and there was no imminent threat at that point.
Earlier Saturday, in several tweets, police urged people to stay away from the area near the Cielo Vista mall due to an "active shooter."

An active shooter near the area of a shopping mall in El Paso is drawing a response from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI.
NBC affiliate KTSM in El Paso reports that 18 people were shot inside a Walmart and that the extent of injuries is unknown.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene to assist the El Paso Police Department.
In several tweets Saturday afternoon, police urged people to stay away from the area near the Cielo Vista mall due to an "active shooter."

At least 19 people are dead and 40 injured after a shooting Saturday near a shopping mall in El Paso, Texas, law enforcement officials said. One suspect, a 21-year-old man from the Dallas area, is in custody, law enforcement sources said.
Multiple law-enforcement sources say police have identified the suspected as Patrick Crusius.
A second person was also taken into custody by authorities, but it is not immediately known what role, if any, the person played in the shooting, sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News.
