I find it easy to believe that BF had never heard of the USS Liberty incident, given what his focus was at the time, and for some time after. And, like you, I had never heard of either the Handsome Truth or the GDL boys before I read them there. The "Liberty" incident would have caught my attention, trying to put myself in his place, but the other two, in and of themselves, would have given me no pause, except possibly mild curiousity.

Also "smalls," in my experience, is a not-that-strongly derogatory term for someone you are implying is inferior to you, or just inconsequential in general. Like "You're killin me, smalls."

I'm very inclined to believe his version of events.
